Description of a Box Jelly fish
Characteristics: the Box Jellyfish are pale blue and transparent which makes them virtually invisible in waters. The cube-like shape is known as their bell. In each corner of the bell can grow up to 15 tentacles, they can grow to three metres in length. Each tentacle has around five thousand stinging cells which are only triggered by the presence of foreign chemicals on its outer layer.
Diet:The Box Jellyfish’s main diet is small fish and crustaceans but they also eat shrimp, plankton and other jellyfish.
Dangers: Once a tentacle or tentacles of the box jellyfish attaches to the skin of a human, it pumps nematocysts (a harpoon-shaped microscopic mechanism that injects venom into the victim) into the skin, causing the sting and agonizing pain.If sting is not treated it may result in death. The dangers to other marine organisms is once stung they are paralysed, killed and swallowed. Its tentacles have thousands of stinging cells on them and that is what injects the venom. The Queensland Ambulance use an anti-venom known as Chironex anti-venom which is Immunoglobulin G (IgG) are antibody molecules from sheep. Blood is taken from the sheep is spun down in a centrifuge, it separates red blood cells from plasma.
